"When we use a hammer, the hammer becomes part of our arm, thus becoming an extension of ourselves."
This phrase was said by a philosopher I can't remember. If we apply it to the internet, we'll see that part of it is real. The internet becomes part of our consciousness, and that's why we cry and rejoice, or get angry about things that only happen online.
This change in human habits has lowered our defenses and influences us to make purely emotional decisions to alleviate guilt that isn't ours, or sadness that isn't ours. It's true that the internet opens us to an absurd range of possibilities, but the expansion of the mind in the digital realm, even though it isn't part of our body, makes us victims of virtual feelings.
Happiness exists on the internet; it happens when someone, a group, or a community soothes people's minds, not by saying nice, meaningless things, but by speaking the truth and being there for each of them. Needless to say, this is everything I wanted this community to be: a place where even strangers meet, they can speak the truth, not veiled lies. A truth that comforts and matures people, that shares experiences with one another, even if you're only 18 and have just reached adulthood, everyone has something to share.
Let's be what ennobles, not what rots the mind. I'm sure 98% of the site is already adults, and we have the maturity to treat each other as human beings. So treat us how you want to be treated and spread knowledge, interests, and true love for others. That's true happiness here.
